Permaculture
The Permaculture Design Manual: Bill Mollison
The definitive work on Permaculture by one of the founders of the Permaculture concept. As one reviewer said, "If information had mass, this book would be a black hole." Filled with strategies, thoughts and ideas on multi-functional, minimal care gardens and food forests. Divided into sections according to climate/terrain, this book is an invaluable resource.
Gaia's Garden: Toby Hemenway
Though not as broad as the Permaculture Design Manual, this book is full of small scale, easy solutions to getting started on a path to self-sufficiency. Highly recommended!
Permaculture, Principles and Pathways: Dave Holmgren
A title by one of the founders of the Permaculture system. More about the philosophy and ways of thinking than concrete solutions, it is nonetheless a valuable resource for the Permaculture concepts. Caveat: Some of the "reasons" for Permaculture presented by Mr. Holmgren are a bit too globalist/socialist for me. He is a proponent of AGW/Climate Change, but hey, everyone has their flaws.
Security
Fire and Stone: Christopher Duffy
The overall view of European fortification theory and practice provides a good background for understanding the forts we see in North America, as well as other locations around the world from the age of European colonization. It has a good general focus on the era, not too wide or too narrow.
Fortification: George Syndenham Clarke
A classic text on fortification from one of the pioneers of the 19th and 20th century. His theories were vindicated by WWI, and it is still a go-to manual today. In depth but very good read.
Viet Cong and NVA Tunnels and Fortifications of the Vietnam War
Excellent book for any aspiring tunnel rat. Filled with photos, will give anyone plenty of ideas!
Field Manual FM 3-34 Engineer Operations August 2011
Army Corp of Engineers Operations Manual. Nuff Said!
Websites and Internet Communities
Resilient Communties
John Robb, a former Air Force Intelligence Officer, literally changed the understanding of how war in the 21st century will be waged with his book, Brave New War. Drawing on his understanding of the fragility of the current infrastructure, he went on to form Resilient Communities, a website dedicated to the very same principles and functions that inspire us here at Eco-Fortress.
