Permaculture
What is permaculture?
Every designer has their own of explaining it. Here at Eco-Fortress we look at it as systems design for the home and garden, each piece being multifunctional. We combine the elements of a home and site with the needs of people to create a synergistic atmosphere where all can thrive.
Below are some examples of permaculture design we often incorporate.

Rain Catchment
Water is the most important resource for self-sufficiency. As such, we provided a number of off-the-grid options for our clients. Cisterns, in ground and above ground tanks, well sourcing and placement, house, road, and building run-off catchment. This is one place where backups to your backups is standard operating procedure.
Swales and Berms
Swales are simply shallow, low depressions in the ground designed to encourage the accumulation of rain during storms and hold it for a few hours or days to let it infiltrate into the soil. Formed with the natural contour of the earth, this creates a lens of water directly beneath the soil. These lenses of water then provide for the needs of the plants placed above and around the swales.
Herb Spirals
Even Natural News endorses these. A simple spiral rolls twelve feet of pathway into a 3-4' area. Over ten different herbs, arranged in a way that puts the driest plants atop, and oriented so that it provides shade for those that need it.
Grow one for your family, and plant others for a greater abundance of spices and herbs for treating illness and wounds, trading, as well as providing a cover and concealment option if the need arises.

Keyhole Beds
This style of beds provides more growing area in a much less space. This allows for more beds in a smaller area, as well as ease of use and harvesting. Often keyhole beds are raised(left), while others are at ground level(right). Some keyhole beds even have their own mulch pits in the center, called African Keyhole Beds. We incorporate either method as per customer request.
Livestock
Livestock is an integral and important of any self sustaining home. Along with the meat, fur, feathers, eggs and milk, they also provide an early warning system in case of intrusion.
